Thursday, 15th April 2010 For years the island of Montserrat and its neighbouring islands have been dealing with the problem of volcanic ash, as the Soufriere Hills Volcano erupts from time to time. During these times flights have been cancelled as the ash can cause engine problems for aircrafts. The other issue with volcanic ash is when it falls to the ground and covers the greenery, houses, cars which then have to be cleaned. Most islanders have become hardened to the cleaning up process when the ash falls and it is no longer perceived as a big deal or major crisis. Everyone just gets on with it. It is fair to say that Montserratians are a resilient people that can face the challenges before them
Today most of the airports in the United Kingdom (UK) have cancelled flights as a result of volcanic ash from the erupting volcano in Iceland. Many people have contacted organisations such as the BBC enquiring about the possibility of ash falling on land. I couldn’t help but wonder how the British population would cope if they had to endure years of occasional volcanic ash fall, which could be a possibility; as at present no one knows how long the Icelandic Volcano will be active. Mouth Miller wonders ‘if volcanic ash became a problem in the UK would most Montserratians living here consider returning to Montserrat to live?’ |
