Session # I
This week our guest is a man I've been a fan of a quite some time. Montserrat's very own Keith Denzil Duxcy Morson. “Trombone Duxcy The Groove Master”, as he is known on his radio show. From star athlete at Montserrat Secondary School (Church Road campus), he is still the best pure middle-distance runner in my opinion, to come out of Montserrat to band leader, to Radio DJ. We will touch on a little of everything.
This week...
On The White Wall

My Montserrat: Welcome to My Montserrat DJ Duxcy!
DJ Duxcy: Thanks for this opportunity.
My Montserrat: Introduce yourself to the fans, tell us which part of the Island you're from and who you are related to.
DJ Duxcy: I am from Tuitt’s Village, that is in the eastern part of Montserrat. Mother is Dora Morson-Furlonge of Tuitts and my father is Samuel Farrell of Long Ground. I am the nephew of famous chef Simon Meade and Ruben Meade in Boston. I am also related to former Montserrat cricketer Howard Meade and former deputy commissioner of police Simon Morson.
My Montserrat: The first time I saw you was in a school meet at Sturge Park. Did you do any running in primary school or was that something you got into after you got to MSS?
DJ Duxcy: I competed one year in primary school, and won a bronze medal in the 400 meters. The next year when I was ready to release the beast I broke my right arm in a warm up jump at Sturge Park, so that was it for me for that year. The following year I entered MSS.
My Montserrat: For those who might not be aware of this, the student population at MSS is divided into four groups called Houses and each house is represented by a color. The colors are Red, Blue, Green and Orange. Competition was always fierce. I am a Blue House man myself, which House were you in?
DJ Duxcy: I am very proud to say I am a former vice captain of Orange House.
My Montserrat: You ran everything from cross country to the sprints and the middle distances and won. I recall some memorable battles between you and Steve foster of Red house, currently Police Commissioner Foster, in the 1500 meters. Do you have a favorite event and is there a particular race that still stands out in your mind?
DJ Duxcy: Now you are bringing back some real memories. I feel very blessed and proud to know that I am the ONLY athlete to win every track event from the 4 mile cross country to the 100 meter sprint, including the 4x100 meter relay. My favorite race is the 800 meters. I think my good friend the Commissioner of Police would like to answer the second part of this question but since this is my moment let me enjoy it. We were both representing Montserrat at the Leeward Islands track and field tournament in Antigua. It was the 800 meters in front a packed crowd at the Antigua Recreation Grounds. I whipped Antigua’s star middle distance runner Kip Browne.
My Montserrat: The cross country record during that time frame was held by one Noel Gray and was approaching legendary status at one point. It was something guys used to go out and chase unsuccessfully year after year. Was the record something you thought about or tried to get?
DJ Duxcy: I never actually went after any records. I was just doing too much, I had to run all the races. It so happened that I broke the 400 meter record and Orange house boys, Scottie, Pops, Patrick and myself broke the 4x100 meter relay.
My Montserrat: It is Easter time again and I'm sure you, like a lot of us who were involved, reminisce on the spectacle that was the Island relay around this time of year. The first leg of the relay ran from the main gate at MSS up to Corkhill village and was itself a big race within the “big race”.You are one of only two guys, the other being a certain Road Runner from Kinsale, who were good enough to win the first leg while still in school. What was that experience like?
DJ Duxcy: Well you know that was like royalty. At that time I knew that I was the best middle distance runner on the Island. Every one was training to beat me. It was all good.
My Montserrat: Let's move on to the music, where and when did you get into music?
DJ Duxcy: I got into music back in the 70’s on Montserrat. To me music is a form of discipline.
My Montserrat: Where did you first start playing the Trombone?
DJ Duxcy: In the Royal Montserrat Defense Force band and and then later for Up Shot band
My Montserrat: After you immigrated what were you doing music wise?
DJ Duxcy: In Hartford I played for chutney super star Terry Gajraj and then later moved on to form my own band Hurricanes Brass. Members were Reality, Belzie, Sally and Garry John.
My Montserrat: When did you first get into the radio business?
DJ Duxcy:That was 1993 in Hartford Connecticut. I hosted Caribbean Togetherness at 89.3 WRTC FM and later was also hired to host Sounds Of The Caribbean at 1480 WKND.
My Montserrat:You are currently on Backyard Sounds Radio tell us about that.
DJ Duxcy: It is an online radio station out of Houston Texas. It's been around for five years and is making waves throughout the world. My show The Ultimate Party is on every Thursday night at 7pm central time.
