The King of Redonda

The story goes something like this... A Montserratian named Matthew Dowdy Shiell proclaimed himself to be the King of the is land Redonda in 1865 as it was unclaimed territory. He supposedly requested the title from Queen Victoria who granted his request. Now most Caribbean people know that Redonda is a small uninhabited island populated by wild goats. It is located between Montserrat and Nevis, but is legally a dependent territory of Antigua and Barbuda. Shiell Snr hoped that his son, Matthew Phipps Shiel (Shiell) would then become the heir of the throne. When Shiell Jr turned 15 he was apparently crowned by a bishop from Antigua.

The young Shiell grew up to become a fantasy and science fiction writer. It was from his writings that the King of Redonda idea emerged. However, the title has been passed down throughout the years with different kings emerging in different continents. There is a flag, motto and also a national anthem for the island of Redonda.

Mermaid of Chances Peak

One myth, which has its roots in a pagan Irish belief, is that of a mermaid who supposedly resides in a pond at the top of Chance's Peak - the 3,002-foot-high summit in the Soufriere Hills (Now an active volcano). This "white-skinned maiden" spends her days combing her hair, protected by a diamondback rattlesnake. The myth claims that he who captures the mermaid's comb and soaks it in the sea before being caught by the snake wins the mermaid's treasure.
